"Revisiting the American West in Der Spaziergang (Red, White and Blue), 2011, Maier-Aichen borrows the desert landscapes of cartoon animator and director Chuck Jones to fully engage the spiraling relationship between painting and photography. Using transparent cels, acrylic and watercolor, the constructed scene is finally registered to film on a copy stand. The marriage of techniques, unique to traditional animation, is offset by the pronounced minimalist imagery of the circular form. Similarly, the painted triangular peaks of Österjön II, 2011, rising out of the dark waters like an iceberg or the last portion of a fatally wounded hull, are suspended in an interchange of form and meaning. In Ennis House, 2011, the artist's drawn symbols gain playful buoyancy as balloons, or props liberated from a nearby film shoot. As their seemingly random orientation plots our gaze onto the Frank Lloyd Wright landmark, eclipsing Hollywood's hallmarks, we are reminded most of the artist's hand." full statement here

A little blip on Ryan Foerster:

"Ryan Foerster's practice combines photographs, zines and found objects, all taken from the artist's own experience and immediate surroundings. Many images begin as biographical or narrative, but through abstractions from available light become atmospheric compositions, blurring the line between action and accident. Coupled with residual images and errors from a shared darkroom, the works obscure private and public, as representational and abstract images are combined with the readymade."

"Marnie envisions Locus Rubric as a series of movements,

interrelated but distinct. In a process he describes as “remixing,” he collages photographs directly onto

the gallery wall then cuts out a sections of collaged wall, and either frames the removal or

reinserts it elsewhere in the gallery. In another movement,

he cuts through his framed photo collages and into the wall creating a continuous

hole/wound/void that opens into the dark space behind the walls. This in and out, this merging of exteriority and

interiority through rupture generates dynamic irregularities and emphasizes

the corporeal vulnerability of his materials and the images

(often flowers) he represents. He writes, "As an unbroken

image, it is incomplete––a disturbance, a distortion, a fissure of some kind is crucial

to open up the image into an activated space." Marnie's cutting, removing, remixing, and reinventing synergizes into a "volumetric hum" that resists categorization and the quiescence of resolution."

I remember seeing Morgan's photographs four or five years ago, that he had been casually taking with a small point & shoot camera. They were dreamy, magical, sensitive, thoughtful, and graphically inclined images from his adventures alone and with friends. I encouraged him at the time to show the work to people and pursue his ideas more in depth. Morgan is incredibly intuitive, his creativiity is magnificently abundant, and his humility and openness really shows through in his work. Congratulations Morgan!

This week I attended the AA Bronson & Peter Hobbs book signing of Queer Spirits at Dashwood Books. Beyond the fascinatingly mystical subject mater, the book in itself is gorgeous and masterfully done. The paper texture and print styles are definitely worth spending time looking at and admiring. You can take a gander at it at Dashwood Books (Bond btwn Lafayette and Bowery) or Creative Time (10th ave and 22nd street)

"From 2008 to 2010 Bronson and Hobbs brought together small groups of men—in Banff, New Orleans, Winnipeg, Manhattan, and Fire Island—in a secret group ritual that was different every time and yet always the same....This book explores each site in five chapters of photographic images, primarily by AA Bronson, together with a brilliant and often humorous reflection on queer animals, forest rangers, shamanism, and park sex by Peter Hobbs." The Camera Club of New York (CCNY) is pleased to present D.F., a solo exhibition of the recent photographs of Mexico City (commonly referred to as Distrito Federal in Mexico), by New York photographer Gerald Vezzuso. Working in a classic 35mm documentary street photography mode, Vezzuso focuses primarily on three aspects of urban life—people at work, lovers in displays of affection, and street dogs, or perros callejeros. Vezzuso creates a finely observed and nuanced portrait of the daily rhythms of this dynamic metropolis.

Vezzuso, legendary as a master teacher in photography programs in New York, has been making trips to Mexico for the last three years, getting to know the capital city while teaching in an academic exchange program. In presenting this new body of work, he experiments with aspects of presentation, printing his images at mural-scale on non-traditional papers and creating zines to make the work more accessible and immediate.

A native of Brooklyn, Vezzuso finds much to identify with in the dense and lively street scenes of Mexico City. As he roams through plazas, parks, markets, and obscure side streets, taking the pulse of the city, he is also attuned to D.F.’s uniqueness– the way in which the ancient and the contemporary mingle in a spirit of nonchalant cohabitation.

In his videos of the last decade, Vezzuso created abstracted portraits of people he knows well, contextualizing them in cinematic layers of atmosphere and sound. Now in his still photographs, his curiosity extends to strangers, whose lives are observed with a sense of intimacy and respect.

Vezzuso teaches photography in New York City at the School of Visual Arts, Columbia Teachers College, and the International Center of Photography, as well as at the Academia de Artes Visuales in Mexico City. He is also on the Fellowship Committee of the Tierney Fellowship, which supports emerging photographers graduating from photo programs in the New York area, as well as in Mexico, India, South Africa, and China.

The curator of D.F. is Lindsey Castillo, a photographer and former student of Vezzuso’s, and Coordinator of the Conversations Series at CCNY. She also makes experimental films and last year helped organize CCNY’s first Zine and Self-Published Photo Book Fair.

The Camera Club of New York is proud to screen selected films by Marie Losier. Her short films present unconventional portraits of artists, directors, musicians and composers. Born in France in 1972, Marie Losier has shown her work at the 2006 Whitney Biennial, the Tate Modern, PS1, MoMA, the Pompidou Centre and various international film festivals. Her first feature, The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, will premiere at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.

I just saw From Here To There: Alec Soth's America at the Walker Museum in Minneapolis MN. This was my first visit to the Walker Museum and I was very impressed. The Alec Soth show consisted of about 5 gallery rooms, each containing a different series (or an off shoot of a series). This was all the work from America (none of the South America works) - selects from Broken Manual, Sleeping by the Mississippi, The Loneliest Man in Missouri, NIAGRA, and more. The photographs are accompanied by a digital slide show, zines, books, and a film.
